Competitively, we currently compete in the Stride eSports League in League of Legends, Chess, Fortnite, Rocket League, Valorant, Madden and Super Smash Brothers. Each team is led by a MGLVA staff member. Tryouts determine which students make our teams. Weekly practices and competition happen in both fall and spring semesters. As representatives of our school to the nation, slightly higher grade standards are held to these players and a minimum age of 13 is a requirement.
Requirements.
Good Standing
To be in good standing with MGLVA Surge Gaming Club (from now on Surge), a club member must have acceptable grades. In each class, a member must hold one of the following:
• A D- (60%) in a percentage based graded class.
• A 2 in a standards based graded class.
Furthermore, if a Surge member is part of a competitive team, this higher standard is in place:
• A C- (70%) in a percentage based graded class.
• A 2 in a standards based graded class.
Probation Levels
Each week, grades will be checked for all Surge members. If they are found to have one or more classes below the level of good standing, they will move to the next level of probation.
• Probation Level 1: A warning email about grades will be sent to the club member. No further action is taken.
• Probation Level 2: An email will be sent to the member. The access to Surge’s Discord will be limited to just the page with information on probation. Surge members that are on competitive
teams can be a part of practices and scrimmages but not actual matches at this level. Additionally, a plan must be in place between one of the sponsoring teachers of the club and a student member to bring grades to the level of good standing to participate in club activities.
• Probation Level 3: An email will be sent to the member. No club or competitive Surge activities can be engaged in until grades are in good standing. It will be highly suggested that the student
member work with a sponsoring teacher on a plan to get grades to good standing.
• If more than 3 weeks on probation: An email will be sent to the member. A required communication with a sponsoring teacher will be required at this point so a plan can be made to get grades to good standing.
Exceptions
Exceptions to the probation levels above can be made by Surge’s lead sponsor if need arises. This decision would only be made if extenuating circumstance similar to those below occur and keep student members from having the ability to raise their grades to good standing:
• A teacher is out and cannot grade turned in work that would raise the grade to good standing.
• A student member has their schedule/class(es) changed.
• A student is new to the school within the last month.
• A student had technology issues outside of their/their family’s control.
